Weekly Reflection 6

Week 7

This week in tech we looked at the SAMR model. It was interesting to work in our small groups to collaborate. The SAMR model stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition. This model is how we can slowly introduce technology into the classroom. Our group found it a struggle to differentiate between some of the models when trying to find ideas for how to incorporate it into an activity regarding students researching an animal. We had lots of ideas of how to use technology in a classroom, but struggled with finding specific examples that had clear differences for augmentation and modification. Below is our post on how we would incorporate the SAMR model into this project.

Soleil, Payten, Keyaira, and Sophie

Substitution

Typing out the report with a computer using a word processor. They are performing the same task, just using technology.

Augmentation

Give students a refined search engine or database to search from, like National Geographic Kids. This way they are still producing a report, but researching is more accessible and reliable.

Modification:

Students research about their animal and write a shorter form report. This report goes into a collaborative and interactive prezi presentation that showcases the entire class’s work. The form of writing and presentation has been modified.

Redefinition

Students research their animals and then build their habitat in Minecraft, using evidence from their research to back up design choices. The task has significantly changed into a creative project where the learning must be highly functional and applied.

Overall I do like the SAMR model and think it is a good way to ease technology into the classroom. It slowly introduces students to different forms of presentations and work. The one thing I would consider is the screen time we are exposing students to. This week was our pod checkpoint presentation and I have been looking into screen time and the effects on children. Overall our group has found that although there are positives to having students exposed to screens for educational purposes, too much screen time has negative consequences that affect students at home and in the class. One article we found talked about how teachers should aim for a balance in the classroom. If students are able to complete the assignment on paper and achieve what they need, it should be done to avoid too much time on screens.
