IDÉLLO: Introduction for K-7 French Immersion Teachers

The first seminar I went to was IDÉLLO: Introduction for K-7 French Immersion Teachers. I chose this one because I have been curious about how we can teach French in the classroom. I was in french immersion from kindergarten to grade 12. In the seminar we went over how to use French resources and navigate the Idéllo website. She taught us how to set up a classroom or share videos with students. There were also many tips and tricks that she shared, for example that we should use the 0.75 speed on videos because students often find them too fast and this is the speed that typically works. She also went over the example of how she had a kid that had to read it in order to understand and so she explained how to set up subtitles on the website. My favourite trick was on a reading resource. She showed us how to find the setting that often helped students with reading. This tool would dim the page and have a bright stripe across the screen that followed the mouse. This would highlight the line that students are on helping them focus and make reading a bit easier. I do not plan on being in a french school but when I am teaching a french class I do plan on using this tool in my future class. All of the resources she presented are free to view as a teacher with our district email and can be adapted for all levels of French.

Student Cybersecurity Awareness Lessons (3-12)

The second seminar I went to was Student Cybersecurity Awareness Lessons (3-12). This was another very interesting topic to cover. I really enjoyed going over the videos about password protection. I remember as a student not caring too much about my password security and thinking there wasn’t anything I needed to protect. I think that had I watched these videos I would’ve had a better understanding of why passwords are so important. I like that the guy uses pokemon cards as an example to show the importance. This used a topic kids can comprehend and care about to help them understand the importance of passwords. The videos are perfect for showing to a class when teaching them digital literacy, how to protect themselves and being aware of your digital footprint. As a future teacher I would love to be able to show these to younger students and help them understand the importance. I also really enjoyed seeing that this resource came with some worksheets for students to complete. It had questions about whether they thought examples of passwords were strong or not. I believe that understanding why we have passwords and how to make strong ones are very important in classrooms. There needs to be a balance of a password being something you can remember while also avoiding easy passwords to guess such as your birthday. Students should also be taught that if you need to write down a password in order to remember it, you need to do so in a safe way that is not accessible to the public.
